Cardinal József Mindszenty found refuge in the American embassy in Budapest after the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956John Sabo, an American priest of Hungarian origin, later a papal prelate, supported the Cardinal living in refuge as much as possible. The volume includes, among other things, the correspondence between Mons Sabo and American diplomats in Mindszenty’s interest and to facilitate his everyday life at the embassy.

The detailed introduction to the volume, written by historian András Miklós Deák, helps the reader understand the role of Mons. Sabo and illuminates the political and historical background of the messages of the letters.

The correspondence in English, Hungarian, and Latin was edited for publication by Ádám Somorjai. The sources containing 228 letters are easier to understand because the editor has written a summary of the content in Hungarian before the letters.
