It is a sad fact that hundreds of thousands of people have left Hungary in several waves during its modern history. During the Kádár era, these people were stigmatized, the word dissident, which had previously been used in colloquial speech, acquired a pejorative meaning, and those who left the country or their relatives who remained at home were persecuted.

Several volumes have been written about the reasons and circumstances of the departure, but not much is said about those who came back and eventually found their happiness here. Many of the children and grandchildren of Hungarians who were once called dissidents have returned home and fallen in love with Hungary. They call themselves „Visszidens” using a specific term.

The portrait volumes of the „Visszidensek” series are about them. Often, returnees are those who act as a bridge between two geographically or culturally distant countries. The stories reveal why these people feel Hungary is their home, why their fate and lives can be presented as an example. The interviews are complemented by photos of each speaker.
